Here’s an example of a greeting card I wrote in Chinese.
Qīn ài de péngyǒumen,
亲爱的朋友们，
Dear friends,
Zhù nín Shèngdàn kuàilè! Zài zhè ge tèshū de jiérì lǐ, wǒ xiǎng xiàng nín biǎodá zuì měihǎo de zhùfú, yuàn nín hé nín de jiārén dùguò yīgè wēnxīn, kuàilè de Shèngdàn jié. Gǎnxiè nín zài guòqù yī nián lǐ de péibàn hé zhīchí, yuàn nín zài xīn de yī nián lǐ jiànkāng, píng’ān, xīn xiǎng shì chéng.
祝您圣诞快乐！在这个特殊的节日里，我想向您表达最美好的祝福，愿您和您的家人度过一个温馨、快乐的圣诞节。感谢您在过去一年里的陪伴和支持，愿您在新的一年里健康、平安，心想事成。
Wishing you a Merry Christmas! On this special occasion, I want to extend my warmest wishes to you. May you and your family experience a cozy and joyful Christmas season. Above is a Chinese Christmas card. Have you noticed the three differences between Chinese Christmas cards and English Christmas cards?
1. Addressing: When writing a Christmas card in Chinese, the address is placed in the upper-left corner, consistent with English. If it’s for familiar relatives or friends, you can use ‘亲爱的 qīn ài de‘ (Dear), such as ‘亲爱的妈妈 qīn ài de māma‘ (Dear Mom). For elders, teachers, or leaders, ‘尊敬的 zūn jìng de‘ (Respected) is appropriate, like ‘尊敬的老师 zūn jìng de lǎoshī‘ (Respected Teacher).
2. Beginning of Paragraphs: In the section below, you can write the content of blessings. Please note that in the content section, there should be a two-space indentation before the first sentence of each paragraph. This is a requirement in Chinese paragraph writing, and it should be observed when writing Chinese greeting cards as well.
3. Signature: The signature on a Christmas card written in Chinese is placed in the lower-right corner. This is different from English, as the signature includes one’s name and the date. It’s important to note that in Chinese, the date format is year first, followed by the month and day.
