Here is the full tongue twister. It is only three short phrases, but every syllable leans on the tone system:Māma qí mǎ, mǎ màn, māma mà mǎ.
妈妈骑马,马慢,妈妈骂马。
Mom rides a horse. The horse is slow. Mom scolds the horse.
The Four Tones in the Twister
The four tones are the backbone of spoken Chinese. This tongue twister is clever because it uses three tones of the “ma” sound plus one second-tone word, so you get all four tones in one short sentence.- First tone (妈 mā): high and flat. The pitch stays high and constant, like holding a steady note. It means “mother.”
- Second tone (骑 qí): a rising tone, like asking a question in English. It means “to ride.”
- Third tone (马 mǎ): the trickiest one. The pitch dips low, then rises. Let it fall low first, or it will sound like something else. It means “horse.”
- Fourth tone (骂 mà): sharp and falling, like a firm command. It means “to scold.”
mā
妈
mother (first tone, high and flat)
qí
骑
to ride (second tone, rising)
mǎ
马
horse (third tone, dips low then rises)
mà
骂
to scold (fourth tone, sharp falling)
How to Practice the Tones
Do not jump straight to full speed. Practice in three stages, just like a musician learning a new piece.- Stage 1: One tone at a time. Say mā, then mǎ, then mà. Hold each tone for two seconds and really feel the pitch change in your throat.
- Stage 2: Pairs with contrast. Say 妈马 (mā mǎ), then 马骂 (mǎ mà). Switching between two very different tones trains your ear faster than repeating one.
- Stage 3: The full twister. Only now run the whole sentence. Record yourself, then listen back and compare with the audio above.
