How to Build Your Own HSK Study Plan
The best roadmap is the one you can actually follow. Here are the four steps I give every student who asks me how to prepare for the HSK.Step 1: Find your starting level.
Take a free HSK level test or an official mock paper to see where you stand today. There is no point planning for HSK 4 if you cannot yet handle HSK 2 material.Step 2: Set your target level.
Base this on your goal: work in China (HSK 4-5), university admission (HSK 4-6), or academic careers (HSK 7-9). Most learners pick the level their employer or school actually requires.Step 3: Calculate your time.
The official guidelines assume 2-3 class hours per week. With that pace, HSK 2 takes about one year, HSK 4 about two years. If you can study 10 or more hours per week, you can roughly halve those timelines.Step 4: Schedule a monthly mock test.
A practice exam every four weeks tells you exactly which section is holding you back, so you can adjust before exam day. Book your exam date first, then work backwards from it. These four steps turn a vague goal into a concrete plan. If you want to know exactly where you stand right now, our free HSK level test gives you a clear starting point in a few minutes. The Learning Method That Works at Every Level
Whatever your target level, the way you learn stays the same. Follow this order and you will build a solid foundation instead of a shaky one:- 1. Start with pinyin and tones. The HSK is a listening-heavy exam, and if your tones are wrong, you will mishear and mispronounce every word built on them. Spend your first weeks mastering pinyin spelling and the four tones before adding vocabulary.
- 2. Build vocabulary in small daily batches. Learn new words every day, but always in sentences, never as isolated items. A word without a sentence is a word you cannot use in the exam.
- 3. Learn grammar through real sentences. Do not memorize grammar rules alone. See how the pattern appears in example sentences, then make your own. Grammar is the skeleton, sentences are the living language.
- 4. Speak from week one. Conversation practice is not something you add later. Find a language partner or a tutor and start speaking simple sentences as soon as you can form them. The speaking section rewards fluency, not perfection.
- 5. Review with spaced repetition. Revisit yesterday’s words before learning today’s. A word seen ten times over a month sticks far better than one crammed ten times in a day.
HSK 1-3: What Passing Each Level Actually Looks Like
At the beginner stage, your goal is to reach a clearly defined level of ability, not to race through a fixed number of words. Here is what each exam expects you to do:- HSK 1 (150 words): you can greet people, introduce yourself, understand simple questions, and handle basic situations like ordering food or asking for directions.
- HSK 2 (300 words): you can hold short everyday conversations, talk about your daily routine, shop, travel, and ask and answer simple questions on familiar topics.
- HSK 3 (600 words): you can handle most daily life situations, express opinions simply, and understand basic conversations between native speakers.

HSK 4-6: What Passing Each Level Actually Looks Like
The intermediate exams move you from survival Chinese into the working world. Here is what each level asks you to demonstrate:- HSK 4 (1,200 words): you can discuss familiar topics in Chinese, handle work-related conversations, and understand the main ideas of short articles and news.
- HSK 5 (2,500 words): you can read Chinese newspapers and articles, give presentations, and express yourself clearly in writing on a range of topics.
- HSK 6 (5,000+ words): you can understand lectures and complex texts, work professionally in Chinese, and write well-structured essays on difficult topics.

HSK 7-9: What the Advanced Exam Requires
HSK 7-9 is the highest exam in the HSK 3.0 system: a single advanced-level test covering about 11,000 words. It evaluates listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation together, plus Chinese culture and national conditions. Passing it means you can work or study in Chinese at an academic level, follow lectures, write research-style texts, and translate between the two languages. It is for academics, researchers, and professionals who need near-native command of the language. The vocabulary at this stage is the language of scholarship and leadership:gāo jí
