但是，在国外没有语言环境，语音和汉字的联系在初学者看来并不是直接而又有效的，所以对于很多华裔少儿来说，我们就会看到这样的一个普遍现象：在使用汉语交流和沟通方面，孩子没有任何问题，但是在汉字的识记和书写方面，却相差甚远。

这段时间我一直在关注国内的新闻，看到国内疫情的情况特别揪心，好在国内的家人亲戚都是安全的，他们号称宅在家里就是为祖国做贡献。国内的家人也很担心我们在美国西雅图的情况，担心华人在这里被排斥，最近看新闻西雅图也有几十例的新冠肺炎确诊了。
其他一些国家，像日本、韩国、意大利、伊朗的确诊病例也都在上升，现在这场疫情已经是全世界人民需要共同去面对的了，在海外的华人们也一定要保护好自己啊，希望大家都能平平安安的！
我跟国内的表妹聊天，听说表妹的孩子，也就是我侄女已经在线上课几个星期了，就连每周一的升旗仪式都是在线举行，虽然不能出门，但是我侄女的功课可是样样没落下。西雅图这边小学课程没有什么负担我跟爸爸不太操心，主要还是操心孩子的中文学习，担心他没有太多中文环境学起来吃力，所以对孩子的中文学习，我跟他爸爸一点也不敢马虎。
最近当地的中文学校基本上都已经关闭停课了，什么时候开课也未知，现在疫情在西雅图这么严重，我跟孩子爸爸商量了还是转为线上学习让人比较放心。

不管是学哪种语言，学的时候都不容易，然而要做到保持水平更是难上加难！那么对不以中文为母语的孩子来说，保持中文水平最重要的因素有哪些呢？结合我多年积累的少儿汉语教学经验，总结出以下几点，给各位父母在孩子的中文教育中做一些参考。
一. 听说的频率
在eChineseLearning的学生中，有些是喜欢中国和中国文化的外籍人士，另外一部分是华裔。大部分华裔中，特别是青少年，他们的父母虽然身在国外，在家里却讲的是国语，这样他们听说中文的时间就会长很多。但是，由于他们的母语仍然是英文，许多书面语言在其家庭生活鲜有用上，汉字的学习更是不可能在家庭生活中完成，所以很多孩子会在eChineseLearning 着重学习我们国内的语文教材。加上他们平时听说基础和能力很强，学起汉字来非常快。
有这样一个华裔小朋友，在我的印象中非常深刻。一个大概十岁的小女孩，住在美国的加州，她是我见过的几乎不需要用英文夹着中文跟我讲话的美国华裔，我一直很疑惑和好奇她是如何做到的。直到有一天，看到他爸爸穿着我们中国传统的唐装出现在她的身后我才明白，一个在国外都身着唐装的中国人，怎么可能会忘了教孩子说中国话呢！还有一个实例是关于我的主管学生的，她是香港人，从小读的国际学校，她妈妈平时跟她说粤语，家里的保姆虽然是说普通话，但是她在家里只用粤语回答保姆的话，所以中文词汇的不足会影响她说中文普通话的水平。因此，语言学习最重要的一点，是需要学习者多听多说，才能保持现有水平并有长足的进步，这也是为什么我们通常会建议没有语言环境的学生最好每周保证足够量的中文练习。
二．语言环境
这一点听起来跟第一点有很多类似的地方，但实则有许多不同。第一点上我讲到的事例都是华裔学生。 现在，我们来讲讲那些由于工作生活和个人喜好等原因来学中文的外籍人士。语言环境其实是指身边有人用中文交谈，哪怕学习者只是被动地多听，也为这门语言打下了一定的基础。我还有个学生是在新加坡从事护肤品销售的，她来学习的时候是零基础，但是学习拼音的时候，我提到“认识”二字的时候她便问我“认识”是什么意思，我做了一番解释后，她突然反应过来说，“很高兴认识你！”这是因为她在从事销售工作的过程中经常遇到华人，这种常用的语句她在平时工作的语言环境中早已学到了，所以她学习的进度会快很多。
另外还有一个从事医学工作的学生，来自以色列，他们一家曾经在中国住过很多年，那时候他们夫妻俩中文都说得很不错。可是后来离开中国先后去了很多国家，最后回到自己的祖国时，发现中文水平已经退化了很多，甚至连日常交流用语都会有些困难。这也是为什么后来他来到了eChineseLearning学校， 参加了为期一年的中文课程，希望能有一个专业的中文老师能够帮助他保持甚至提升自己的中文水平。在课堂上，充分的练习和专业的指导很快就帮助他实现了这个目标。
当然，除了以上两点之外，还有其他的因素会影响着中文水平在没有特定环境下的遗忘速度。比如开始学习的年龄，是否有效的学习方法和天赋等。eChineseLearning有很多学生是青少年，我印象中，一对从3岁开始学中文并上中文学校的美国兄弟是远远比一个16岁为了考大学开始学中文的美国少年的中文水平要高很多的，他们忘记说中文的几率也小很多，就像我们母语是中文的人一样，即使我们身在他乡很多年，遗忘自己的母语也几乎是不可能的。相比较而言，学习一年半中文就能自如交流的清华外籍教授可能更多的要依靠正确的学习方法，以及语言学习的天赋。
基于以上种种原因，这就要求在汉语的学习和教授中，我们的学生和老师需要做到以下这些：
对于学生来说，除了上课要好好消化老师所教授的知识之外，下课后要积极复习，不管有没有语言环境，多读多说多练是保持和提高中文水平的重要途径。如果不复习，讲到课文或对话时却忘光了前面学的生词，也会很影响教学的进度和效果的。在我们的课堂，这是必不可少的一个环节，而且我们针对不同的学生会设置不同的复习方法，可以说是量身打造的复习方法。
对于老师来说，eChineseLearning要求老师们严格控制使用媒介语，如果老师过多使用英文，会减少学生在课堂上听和说中文的时长，那么势必会影响学习的效率。而对于那些工作上需要使用中文的学生来说，老师们选择使用相关专业教材来教授，使其学以致用，才能实践出真知，越用越活，自然也提高得更快（一般这种情况属于我们的Industry-Specific Chinese Lessons）。同时，老师们定期都必须要参加专业的教学培训和进行严格的考核。我们的教学方法通过了十几年的沉淀积累，已经形成了一套比较成熟且实用性强的体系，这也使eChineseLearning的教学质量在行业内处于领先地位。
总而言之，学生们需要多听多练，并给自己创造尽可能多的语言环境，把中文学习融入自己的生活；此外，学生也需要及时抓住恨与课堂与中文老师一起学习的机会，多听、多说，一定能保持好汉语的水平并取得更大的进步！
