So, how did the phrase, “打工人(dǎgōng rén) laborer” come into use?
“打(dǎ)” means “to hit” in English. The term “打工(dǎgōng) work” first appeared in Hong Kong. It refers to being, “employed by someone”, and is the colloquial way to say “to be engaged in paid work.” The tone of the word is neutral – it expresses neither praise nor derogation.
It was not until the 1980s, at the beginning of reform and opening up, that the term spread in the south of China, particularly throughout Guangdong Province due to Guangdong’s proximity to Hong Kong. As employment opportunities boomed, workers soon headed out to foreign countries all over world to “打工(dǎgōng)”.
But the meaning of “打工(dǎgōng) work” has also changed – now, we understand it to mean: temporary, replaceable labor.

The term “laborer” has become the latest buzzword on Chinese social media. It applies to all kinds of employees, from blue-collar workers and low-level staff to middle managers and top executives, and is used in contexts that seem uplifting and aspirational, as well as those that are 自嘲(zìcháo)self-deprecating.

搬砖 (bānzhuān): v. to do hard physical labor

“搬砖(bānzhuān)” originally refers to moving bricks. In Internet language, “搬砖(bānzhuān)“ has been extended to include working hard, doing repetitive tasks, and not making much money. People continue to use this phrase instead of directly saying, “going to work.”
“我要去搬砖了(wǒ yào qù bānzhuān le)” actually means “I’m going to work”; “Moving bricks makes me happy” actually means “Work makes me happy.” Of course, this is usually said sarcastically or tongue-in-cheek.
社畜 (shèchù): n. corporate slave

The term “社畜(shèchù) corporate slave” originated from Japan. “社(shè)” means “社会(shèhuì) society” and “畜(chù)” means livestock. It is a derogatory term to describe employees who are squeezed like livestock for all they’re worth by a company after they start working.

The term “打工仔(dǎgōng zǎi)” means the same as “打工人(dǎgōng rén)”, but the term “打工仔(dǎgōng zǎi)” has changed from a relatively simple term to encompass all of today’s laborers. The reason that “打工仔(dǎgōng zǎi)” are willing to “自嘲(zìcháo) laugh at themselves ” is because, as Romain Rowland once said: “There is only one kind of heroism in the world: to see the world as it is, and to love it.” This is true for every ordinary “laborer”.

“光棍节 (guānggùn jié) Singles Day” is an unofficial Chinese holiday (and shopping period) that celebrates bachelors, bachelorettes, and single people in general. Young Chinese people take the opportunity to make the most of being single. Always celebrated on November 11th, the holiday falls on a Wednesday this year.
Its origins stem from the fact that there are four “1” sm which resemble sticks – thus Singles Day is also called “bare stick day”, a nod to there being no branches that might scatter leaves (to start a family). If you know about other Chinese holidays, you may have realized that Chinese people tend to place a lot of emphasis on numbers, and they like to associate different numbers with various meanings – thus 11/11 gained popularity.
Some have said that this day means “one heart and one hand, in all one’s life”, and people like the idea of getting married on this day. Some feel it reflects the process of transitioning from being single to being married.
Celebration
Everything can be made to feel or seem “singular” (unique).
On November 11th, you might see a group of single men taking the Route 11 bus. “The 风景 (fēngjǐng, scenery) on the road is wonderful, and we are the scenery in eyes of other people as well.”

Working Overtime
It’s not uncommon to work overtime in China. In the process of working overtime, you may find that have no “精力 (jīnglì) energy” to get nostalgic and reminisce about past lovers or relationship histories, thus no strength to sigh deeply in despair that you are alone. Okay, maybe this is a bit dramatic, but it is true that on Singles Day people will choose to stay in the office late so that all they need to focus on is how to complete the tasks at hand, then go back home and go to sleep.

One of the most useful and motivating topics for my Mandarin Chinese students is to talk about important life lessons using Chinese expressions and vocabulary. So, what life lessons do we talk about?
Popular topics are: renting or buying a home, applying for visas and residency abroad, how to follow recipes and instructions in the kitchen, and because money is so important, some financial phrases are very common. These phrases can be used for personal finance, or also in the business environment. In today’s lesson, I’d like to introduce some of these important phrases to you.
Personal financing refers to the management of money and income in order to prosper in the future. Finance is often connected with “投资 (tóuzī) investment” because this is intertwined with finance.
Financial management also contains “风险管理 (fēngxiǎn guǎnlǐ) risk management.” Owing to the uncertainty of future events both personally and also in the wider economy, including personal safety risk, property risk and market risk, all of which may affect the risk of income interruption or other unforeseen events that could put your financial situation in disarray, “风险管理 (fēngxiǎn guǎnlǐ) risk management” will help you balance this risk.
The stock is now a popular method of investment for Chinese citizens. Investors are engaged in stock trading activities. The main goal is to make a “利润 (lìrùn) profit” by putting the “成本 (chéngběn) cost” into the stock market, according to the price difference. All stock price spreads are subject to variation, especially in volatile market conditions. Therefore, investors are also very concerned about the “涨 (zhǎng) rise,” “跌 (diē) fall,” and “停 (tíng) cease” of stocks in the market.
Common financial vocabulary terms:
涨 (Zhǎng) = rise, go up, swell

I have known many foreigners who have come and visited China for different reasons–whether it be for immersion, traveling, work and more. Usually at some point these people can’t get by on their foreign bank and need to use one of the major banks in China, which include:
● 中国银行 (Zhōngguó yínháng) Bank of China

● 中国建设银行 (Zhōngguó jiànshè yínháng) China Construction Bank

● 中国工商银行 (Zhōngguó gōngshāng yínháng) Industrial and Commercial Bank of China
|
● 中国农业银行 (Zhōngguó nóngyè yínháng) Agricultural Bank of China
|
I often use “中国银行 (Zhōngguó yínháng) The Bank of China” because of the high number of locations and the relatively easy methods of dealing with foreign payments. But what services does this bank provide, and how can you use it? Let’s find out.
Normally, “中国银行 (Zhōngguó yínháng) The Bank of China” is available for people to use 9am-5pm (Monday-Friday, for Corporate banking); 9am-5pm (Monday-Sunday, for Personal banking). They have many locations in major cities and are always easy to find.
“中国银行 (Zhōngguó yínháng) The Bank of China” offers many services, but one most often used by foreigners, and available to them, is inward or outward “汇款 (huìkuǎn) remittance.” This is a sum of money sent, especially by mail, in payment for goods or services or as a gift.
A lot of my friends from other countries like/have to send money to their parents, relatives, or significant others, after working in China for a long period of time.
So what do you need to know before you go ahead and submit a remittance?
1. You need to know the “汇款限额 (huìkuǎn xiàn’é) remittance limit.”
There are going to be limited to how much you can send. Make sure to ask the teller about this.
In official language the rules say: “The remittance amount shall not exceed the standards specified on relevant certificates provided. When foreign exchanges remitted abroad accumulatively reach an equivalent value of below USD 50,000 (inclusive) on that very day, customers can transact the business at Bank of China with personal valid identity documents. When the amount exceeds the above number, customers should transact the business with true certificates of trading amounts under current items.”
2. You need to have your identity documents.
That means your passport, and any other forms of ID native to your own country to verify your identity.
3. You need to have Mandarin-speaking skills.
I always encourage my students to brush up on their financial Mandarin before tackling a visit to the bank. If you are feeling unconfident about your Mandarin level and the necessary vocab, then schedule a lesson in industry-specific Mandarin!
Let’s focus on this word: “汇款 (huìkuǎn) remittance”. Here are several ways to use it in a sentence:

I’m going to tell you about China’s many 共享单车 (gòngxiǎng dānchē) programs. These programs are cheap, convenient and changing the way that locals and visitors are getting around in China.
I’ve been studying Mandarin Chinese in Beijing for nearly a year now. Myself and my fellow students wouldn’t dare buy a car and try to navigate the unknown streets of Beijing in it. For us, traveling on foot, train and bus has generally been the way to go. However, recently “共享单车 (gòngxiǎng dānchē) bike-sharing” programs have changed the way we move about Beijing and other Chinese cities.
Decades ago, China was known as the “Kingdom of Bicycles”. Before the enormous economic growth of the past decades, bicycles were the main form of transportation in the cities and images of streets packed with cyclists going about their day on wheels were world famous. Over the past years, however, the government has invested in the world’s largest train and highway systems. Bike use had been in a sharp decline.
Now, bikes are back! Due to congested roads and rising pollution levels, more and more Chinese citizens are turning to bike-sharing programs for necessary trips around the city and also for fun, casual joyrides. Although bike-sharing programs have been popular for many years in cities like Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Boston, China now has 16 of the world’s 20 largest bike-sharing systems and they’re all growing rapidly!
There are over 20 different companies involved in 共享单车 (gòngxiǎng dānchē) programs. Two of the most popular and notable are“摩拜 Mobike” and “Ofo”. Ofo now has over three million bikes in 50 Chinese cities and is expanding internationally. Similarly, Mobike’s bright orange bikes are now becoming a common sight in Chinese cities. Users can download an app, pay a deposit and use the app to unlock the bike after making a small payment (only about $0.14/1RMB per half hour!) and make their travel plan for short trips around the city- often from the train station to their final destination.
These two companies, along with others, are not only changing the way locals get around, but also how Chinese language students are getting from A to B as well! I’m using my feet a lot less and riding on wheels on a daily basis now.
共享 (gòngxiǎng) = to enjoy together; share; sharing.

It’s no secret that international businesses are always looking to hire people who can speak multiple languages. With ease of travel and remote conferencing becoming increasingly common with contacts in China, it’s now beneficial to learn some Mandarin business phrases.
Being able to communicate politely in Chinese will make an even better first impression than a firm handshake and a kind “hello! (你好 nǐ hǎo)”.
Let’s learn a few important phrases that will both endear you and help you be understood:

Making a phone call be the first step in building business relationships, and can have an important impact on the success or failure of such relationships.
In the context of business Chinese, when you make the first contact, the first sentence used should be “喂，您好！(wèi, nínhǎo!) How do you do?” We usually don’t use “你好 (nǐhǎo),” which means hello, because “您 (nín)” shows more respect than “你 (nĭ)” does, and is often used to call those who are older or have a higher ranks.
Another etiquette in the context of business Chinese: when receiving a phone call while not knowing who is calling, we often use “请问您是哪位 (qǐng wèn nín shì nǎ wèi) may I know who is speaking please?” But in daily conversations, we often use a less respectable form: “你找谁 (nǐ zhǎo shuí) whom are you calling?” “请问 (qǐng wèn) may I ask… please?” shows that you are polite and have good manners. “哪位 (nǎ wèi)” and “谁 (shuí)” both mean who. “哪 (nǎ)” in this sentence means which, “位 (wèi)” is a measure word. “你找谁 (nǐ zhǎo shuí)” is used in daily Chinese and the tone is not as polite.
When you are ready to hang up the phone, you can say:
Zàijiàn, hěn gāoxìng hé nín zài diànhuà zhōng gōutōng, bǎochí liánxì.

"送礼 (sònglǐ) Gift giving " is an important part of "商务往来 (shāngwù wǎnglái) doing business" in China. Cultural traditions play an important role in business life in China. So there are some important "禁忌 (jìnjì) taboos" that business people should be aware of.
First, people should not give clocks to others since the Chinese pronunciation of "送钟 (sòngzhōng) to give clocks" is the same as that of "送终 (sòngzhōng) to attend upon a dying relative."

Ending a telephone conversation politely will help you make a good impression. Let's start our Chinese lesson about how to hang up a phone call!
1. To a close friend
If you are familiar with the person, you can end the conversation by saying:
Hái yǒu shénme wǒ kěyǐ bāngmáng de ma?
还 有 什么 我 可以 帮忙 的 吗？

2. To a friend (but you are unfamiliar with his/her family)
If you know the person but are unfamiliar with his/her family, you should say:

3. To convey a message

Holding fist is a form of greeting, usually used by men, with one clenched fist cradled in the other hand and held at chest level. It is a traditional custom in China and is used to express "祝贺 (zhùhè) congratulations" and good "愿望 (yuànwàng) wishes."
In modern China, holding fist is widely used in business situations. So, the way to properly hold fist is just like this: standing upright, hold the right hand (in fist) with the left hand and rock them up and down slightly at roughly chest level. Please see the following picture.

In China, expressing regards through holding fist is often used in the following three situations.
1. At every major event or holiday, such as "春节 (chūnjié) Spring Festival." We often show regards through holding fist when we meet our "邻居 (línju) neighbors," "朋友 (péngyou) friends" or "同事 (tóngshì) colleagues."
2. On festive occasions, such as "婚礼 (hūnlǐ) weddings" or birthday parties, the "客人 (kèrén) guests" can hold fist to congratulate the "主人 (zhǔrén) hosts."
3. At farewell parties, people often hold fist while saying "Take care!" to each other. Occasionally, we hold fist to request forgiveness.
When we show our regards through holding fist, we also use special words and expressions, such as: "节日快乐 (jiérì kuàilè) Happy holidays," "恭喜 (gōngxǐ) congratulations" or "久仰 (jiǔyǎng) I've heard so much about you."
